Mimi Sue's Cottage

A home is much more than a house built of lumber, brick, or stone. A home is made of love, sacrifice, and respect. We are responsible for the homes we build. We must build wisely, for eternity is not a short voyage. There will be calm and wind, sunlight and shadows, joy and sorrow. But if we really try, our home can be a bit of heaven here on earth. Peanut Brittle

What do you do on a cold and snowy February afternoon?

You make peanut brittle.

Then you package it up (well, most of it) and take it to your cute little
neighbor for her 88th birthday.

Because she loves it and she asked for it.

And when you're 88 I guess you can eat whatever you want to.

Happy Birthday Loreine!

Peanut Brittle

1 cup butter

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tbsp light corn syrup

2 cups shelled peanuts

Melt butter in heavy pan or non stick frying pan.  Add sugar, corn syrup and peanuts.

Cook and stir over medium heat until temperature reaches 300 degrees
on your candy thermometer.

Pour brittle onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet .

Cool and then break into pieces.

Try not to eat it all or you might not make it to 88.

Then again you might.

Built-in Bookcases

When we designed our home a few years ago we decided that we wanted some built in bookcases
on either side of the fireplace in our family room.  The mister really wanted to build
them himself so we moved in and knew we would just
live with the empty spaces until he got around to making them.

Almost five years later the project is finally underway!

He actually started this project last fall but things just kept getting in the way.

Like a trip to Disneyland, Thanksgiving, Christmas and just life in general.

He's not a cabinetmaker or even a carpenter so he's had to figure things out
along the way.

Things are going well as far as I can tell.

The garage and shop are full of bookcase pieces and sawdust.

Looks like some painting is next.

I'm so looking forward to getting this project done!

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Valentine Peat Pots

I've been wanting to make these little peat pot containers
for quite some time.

I had a few unembellished ones hanging out in the shed so I
braved the snow and brought them inside and gave them
a coat of off white paint.

I used some ruffled crepe paper, book page hearts, the top of a sparkly heart from the
dollar store, ribbon, a pipe cleaner, and paper shred to make my version.

Here are a few from my Pinterest Board.

One for spring...

A fun gift for a friend...

Adorable Easter...

Halloween...

Birthday...

Christmas...

Patriotic...

The ideas are endless.

All the links to these pictures are on my Pinterest Board.

Little Houses

It seems like I've always loved little houses.

When I was about eight years old I received a metal doll house for
Christmas.  I was overjoyed! It had little plastic furniture
and a little plastic family. When playing with that little
doll house you had to be careful.  It had sharp edges so
when you reached in to rearrange the furniture sometimes it would
cut your hand or arm.  But it was so worth the pain!

Last month my friend Janis had a birthday.

I decided to make her a soft little house.

1953 is the house number and the year she was born.

Thanks for catching up with me Janis!

It has a little bird singing on the front lawn.

It was really fun to make.

This is where I got my inspiration.

Aren't they cute?

I have a Pinterest Board full of little houses.

Little houses still make me happy.

9-1 1

We had quite the snowload on the wing of our shed.

Heavy, wet, icy snow.

The Mister decided he should do something about it.

I stood in the warmth of the house, my cell phone in my hand
and dialed 9 1.  Ready to push the other 1 when he fell off that icy,
slippery roof.

But he didn't, thank goodness.
