Mimi Sue's Cottage

A home is much more than a house built of lumber, brick, or stone. A home is made of love, sacrifice, and respect. We are responsible for the homes we build. We must build wisely, for eternity is not a short voyage. There will be calm and wind, sunlight and shadows, joy and sorrow. But if we really try, our home can be a bit of heaven here on earth. Thomas S Monson

Ivy

I love houseplants.  Ferns, ficus, palms, peace lilies, pothos, I love them all.

I think it comes from being a young wife in the early 70's.  We all
had plants hanging from macrame hangers all over our one bedroom apartments.
We were pretty groovy back then.

Houseplants seem to add a little life to a room, especially in the winter
when there's not much green or growing outside.

One of my favorite plants is ivy.  I especially love ivy topiaries that come in all
shapes and sizes.

I've had this one for a few years now.  It loves the north facing window it sits
in front of.  I water it a couple of times a week and feed it every now and then.

About every six months it needs a little trim.

Looks like this one does too.

I take the trimmings and stick some of them in small bottles filled with water.

I just love these little ivy sprigs.  They fit just about anywhere.

When they grow nice long roots I take them out of the bottles and plant them all together in a small clay pot.  Then I have another ivy plant to set on the front porch or somewhere in my house or give to someone as a gift.  Or if you still have your macrame hanger, that would work too.

Primroses on the First Day of Spring

It's been such a cold, snowy, gray winter that these
little primroses are extra welcome this year.

They're a light that says spring at the end of our wintery tunnel.

They make me so happy.

Home Made Wedding Reception

Who says wedding receptions have to be expensive?

Last week my darling friend and neighbor's daughter got married.

She asked all of her friends for help.

So we did.

This is just the top layer of the cake, the rest of it had already been eaten!

It's sitting on a wooden, handmade box that has cute little messages burned into it.
AND  the birds on top are made of balsam wood.

 So adorable.

They had the reception in an old barn just west of town.  The farmer let them
have their reception in it for free.  He just asked that the family do some sort
of community service instead of paying him.  Great idea!

See that mower hanging from the ceiling?  It's decorated with grapevine
and little lights and chandeliers.  That middle one is from my
entryway.  The mister was kind enough to take it down and haul it
over to the barn for me.

The mother of the bride made these fabulous garlands out of coffee filters.

Loved that look.

The flowers were done by a friend.

Borrowed old doors for the photo booth backdrop.

Lots of presents for the newlyweds.

My friend Janet and I made these little three inch pies for the reception.

Apple, berry, and cherry.  One hundred and fifty of them.

It was such a fun day and with everyone helping it wasn't a huge amount of work.

And it didn't cost a huge amount of money.

A Visit

Last week these two little sweetpeas and their parents came for a visit.

They used to live less than a mile away.

Last summer their Daddy got transferred six hours south of us.

And so they moved.

It's been hard.

It was 31 degrees outside.  Perfect weather for a popsicle.

First we did a little house cleaning.

Then we fed the ducks.

And a great big goose.

We're so lucky to live about a mile away from this pond.

It's a stop over for the birds that migrate in the fall and spring.

Some birds live here full time.

People can fish here.  We like to walk around it.

It's a great place to take little grandchildren who've migrated
too far from their Mimi and Grandpa.

Did I mention it's been hard?
