Mimi Sue's Cottage

A home is much more than a house built of lumber, brick, or stone. A home is made of love, sacrifice, and respect. We are responsible for the homes we build. We must build wisely, for eternity is not a short voyage. There will be calm and wind, sunlight and shadows, joy and sorrow. But if we really try, our home can be a bit of heaven here on earth. Birthday Blooms and a Lunch

In October, for my birthday, a friend gave me this beautiful Amaryllis. It was supposed to bloom for Christmas. But instead it bloomed this week.
And it looks like it's going to keep blooming for awhile.

It's got six blooms on one of the stalks.

And another stalk getting ready to open. The flowers are a beautiful salmon color.

So thank you Barbara for my beautiful birthday, Christmas, Valentine flower.
OK, now for some fun news. Kelly, who has a cute blog, Monarch Post, is putting together a blogger's lunch on February 16th at 12 noon at the Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, Utah. So put it on your calendar and save the date. Go on over to her blog for all the details. The more people who come, the more fun it'll be don't you think?

Progress

Putting up the sheetrock is a slow process. We had our son in law and my friend Janis's son over last week to help with the ceiling. The mister has a pinched nerve in his neck, which is pretty painful, so he's resting it and trying to recuperate. Like everything else we do here at Mimi's Cottage it's slow going but eventually it'll get done.

Rumpus Room

Our big winter project, here at Mimi's Cottage, is to finish up our basement family room.
This will give us much needed space when our family gets together. Last week the mister framed up the walls and installed the rough electrical stuff. This week we are working on the insulation.
I feel like I have fiberglass in all my pores.

Drywall's next.

Cold and Gray

Since moving to Utah from the central coast of California in 2002, January has not been my favorite month of the year. This year has been particularly cold and gloomy. The skies have been overcast, we've had bad air quality every single day for weeks and weeks. Last night thick fog covered our part of the state. This morning we woke up to a winter wonderland.

That's why I put a picture of one of our roses from last summer in the header.
I need a little color and a reminder that we'll be out of the cold and gray eventually. I hope.

Fast and Fun and Cheap Treats

Probably everyone in the country has made these fun little treats, but this was the first time I've made them and they were so much fun. I bought a bunch of these big candy bars, (10 for $10.00) at the grocery store...Took the outside paper wrapping off...
Used the wrapping as a template...

Used scrapbook paper for the new wrapper and decorated the heck out of them.

With stuff I already had.

I gave them to my friends. Think about how cute they'd be for Valentine's Day.

This and That

We had a wonderful anniversary yesterday. We spent the day in Salt Lake City shopping and wandering around. We had a light lunch at a cute little cafe and then went out to dinner last night. Very relaxing, no pressure, and just fun. After the hectic holidays it was a much needed day of rest.

A few odds and ends for todays post. One of my cute friends and neighbors gave me this old postcard. The postmark is dated 1911. I color copied it and made a few tags. Glittered it up a bit. Wish I'd remembered to take a picture of them when they were finished. Duh!
I got a few cute things from my friends for Christmas. A handmade bookmark and lace plate from my friend Sue. Love these.

Janis, over at Grams, made me this cute garland. You've probably seen these made out of coffee filters? Well Janis made this out of cupcake papers. It is adorable. Love this.

Ignore the untrimmed door.

My friend Kay's husband is a fabulous artist and he painted this picture of their house. Then he made cards from the painting. This house is down the street from me. Aren't I lucky to live in this neighborhood? Yes I am!
Janis also made me these embellished clothespins. All of them are so cute. AND practical.

Our holidays were wonderful. We enjoyed spending time with our family and friends. Our Christmas decorations are all packed up and back in the basement. Our anniversary is over and we've been making to do lists. Daughter #3 got engaged at Christmas. There's going to be a wedding at Mimi's Cottage in June!

Happy Anniversary Sweetie

How did this happen? Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday we were newly married with our whole lives ahead of us. Today we celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary. Gee, I guess I must've been one year old when we got married!

To all of you young wives and mothers out there I want to say try to live in the moment, enjoy every minute of your busy lives. Before you know it your kids will have kids of their own.
