Here in Utah we love our holidays. So, exactly three weeks after the 4th of July, we have another big extravaganza. On July 24th we celebrate Pioneer Day. More parades, barbecues, picnics, big family gatherings and yes, more fireworks. In the heat of summer. Pioneer Day is to honor and celebrate the day Brigham Young and his wagon train came through the mountains and took one look at the Salt Lake Valley and declared, "This is the place."
They came to the Utah territories, (a desert then), seeking a place where they could practice their religion without being persecuted. Many, many of them died and the hardships were tremendous. So thank you pioneers. We honor you.

I'm reading the new edition book of the Mother of Joseph Smith written by her, they had her notes in the archives and found them in 1960 and it's putting a whole new reality to WHY this really had to happened.
My sister adores and is her favorite book, she's reading it again as she has been in Nauvoo this week and there is so much history and car riding. I love it so far and learning so much about the faithful Saints who struggled so hard to find a new home.
This day IS worth celebrating and giving thanks.

Very well put Miss Mimi. Love this post. I too am grateful for the men, women and children who had the desire to excape persecution and make the sacraficies to find a safe place to live. It's because of them that I am here. A safe place for my ansestors to live and make way for me to be born and raised here. For my children and my grandchildren to call this home.

It was pretty quiet around our town for Pioneer day. I saw some of the parade from Salt Lake on tv. Looked pretty festive.
Did you ever see Stacey's blog "the thrifty chick"? She passed away a couple of weeks ago. A young LDS gal who lived in Utah (not sure where). Just gave birth to a baby, and she had a stroke. Her sister left a post about her on the blog. So sad.
