Mimi Sue's Cottage

A home is much more than a house built of lumber, brick, or stone. A home is made of love, sacrifice, and respect. We are responsible for the homes we build. We must build wisely, for eternity is not a short voyage. There will be calm and wind, sunlight and shadows, joy and sorrow. But if we really try, our home can be a bit of heaven here on earth. Yard Sale-ing 2009

This has been a strange year for yard sales. In our cold climate we don't have sales year round like some of you warmer weather girls. So when it's spring time we do a little happy dance and off we go. Only this year it has rained almost every. single. weekend. Until two weeks ago when it was the 4th of July! Last week we finally had a dry, warm, non-holiday weekend. There were 2,463 yard sales listed on Craig's List here on the Wasatch Front. The first sale I hit was about 20 minutes away. It was advertised as an estate sale. The woman who had lived there had just been admitted to a care center and some "relatives" were cleaning out her house. I found this bag in the garage and took a peek. It was filled with vintage linens...

Most of it was hand embroidered, some had tatted or crocheted edgings. There were four or five of those old card tablecloths with matching napkins. I remember my grandma having a few sets used only when her friends came over to play canasta.
I Love Lucy would've loved this apron...
I found a package with a linen piece in it from Hawaii. The post mark was 1942 and there was a stamp on it that said Passed by Army Censor. I wonder if this was from a husband or boyfriend. The woman never had any children, could he have been killed during WWII?
It was still in the package. Could it have been too painful for her to use it? Can you tell I love a good mystery?
Most of it's in pretty bad shape, yellowing, stains, mouse damage, but I'm getting out the oxiclean and starting to work.

I found a few other things at the estate sale. An old ice cream maker and a lard bucket made out of wood. They both need a plant in them, don't you think?
An old suitcase...

A red child size folding table and a croquet set...

Total cost for all these treasures? Ten dollars. Don't you love finding a great yard sale?

You do have a knack! LOL I love a mystery too. You know, you could write a novel around that package with its Hawaiian linen still in it.....what do ya think?

Totally wonderful treasures! Can't wait to see what next weeks treasures will be! :-)♥

WOW you did good! I love old vintage linens--I can't believe you got that whole bag AND the buckets AND other stuff for less than $10. Lucky you. And the mystery linens are very cool. That would make for an interesting story.
I was thinking on Saturday going to a yard sale might be fun. I guess now I know I better check Craig's List first.

Great finds. I've been looking for a old wood croquet set for my kids, I wish I'd find a deal like that. I have a bunch of my grandma's old hand embroidered and hand crocheted linens, aren't they wonderful? I love your blog. Thanks for sharing.
Blessings,
Marcia

You are right about not finding any yard sales in the winter in Utah. You found some great things and the price is even better.
I am in Vegas this week and boy, is it hot. Can hardly get out and about.

Your best find could be the Mammy & butler hand towel!
Dont you love the things in old bags...even with mouse pee?
Dont breathe it in, hold your breath.

Oh Mimi, what a deal you got on those linens! I'm sure they will clean up splendidly. If Oxyclean doesn't get it all out, I use Biz and that removes everyting except rust. This was a really great sale. I've been striking out at the sales this summer, still waiting for that really great treasure trove. I still have a couple months to look:>)

I'm glad those vintage linens found a good home with you! It just makes me cry to think of all the people getting rid of heirlooms when a family member passes; how precious those things must have been to someone at one time!
