Mimi Sue's Cottage

A home is much more than a house built of lumber, brick, or stone. A home is made of love, sacrifice, and respect. We are responsible for the homes we build. We must build wisely, for eternity is not a short voyage. There will be calm and wind, sunlight and shadows, joy and sorrow. But if we really try, our home can be a bit of heaven here on earth. The Dump, I Mean Landfill

When I was a little girl a trip to the dump was an exciting adventure. Where we lived, back in the 60's, they stilled burned trash so the whole place was stinky with toxic smoke. The seagulls usually were there by the hundreds looking for a little lunch. Great treasures were to be found if only you dug a little. So when the Mister asked if I'd like to come along to the dump I jumped at the chance. The dump is now called a Landfill. You bring in green waste and they turn it into compost and mulch. There's a huge recycling center and places for all kinds of scrap metal, wires, and old electronic equipment. You can also bring trash. It gets dumped on a huge cement slab. See the beautiful Wasatch Mountains in the background?

Then a big tractor comes along and pushes the trash over the side of the cement slab and into the dump, er, landfill. That guy in the picture was unloading his truck right next to ours.
Beautiful clouds at the landfill.

People were throwing away perfectly good stuff. I thought of all of you furniture redoers when I saw these kitchen cabinets waiting to get pushed over the side.

And what about this recliner? You girls could do something fabulous with it I'm sure.

I loved this. Don't you think this is a great idea?

This is what I brought home from the landfill. A little child size red metal patio chair. It's still quite an adventure.

Oh Mimi, you're so lucky to have a dump near you, that lets you take things as well as bring them! That little chair is just adorable, and I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you saved it! I wonder what that white thing is in the picture above it. It almost looks like a fancy kitty or doggy sofa!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME...THERE IS ALL THAT GOOD STUFF THERE AND I AM PAYING DOLLARS FOR MINE???

Can you believe that childs chair was RED MIMI!!!

Hope you didnt bring home that 1/2 recliner...probably infested with fleas, bees.

You need to take your lawn chair out there everyday, get your suntan with baby oil like we use to and load up!!! Fill that garage up.

Love the landfill story, we loved to go too. thanks for the tutorial.

What a beautiful little chair. At our recycling center we have a community building that you put usable stuff. Your only suppose to take one item a week. But all the good stuff gets taken by the staff........I guess they need it working at a recycle center.LOL

I am not above a little dump shopping, no I'm not. I have often thought our local dump should have a give and take spot like yours. If something is still useful why not keep it in use? The child chair is adorable and it would have been a shame to waste it in the landfill before it's time!

That's so funny. I've been meaning to post about my trip to the dump and my finds but I haven't had time. Love the chair.

I only remember going to the dump once as a child. I was visiting my cousins and my uncle took us with him. I even remember riding in his truck. I guess I didn't know what a dump was until that day, so the memory has stayed with me. It sure wasn't like the one you posted about :-)
Blessings,
Marcia

What dump is this? I totally need to go there.

I'm in SLC, I wonder if the one here has a give and take?
